Community discussion
A standalone FromSoftware co-op action spin-off that compresses Elden Ring combat into ~40-minute, three-day expeditions for up to three players, ending in a Nightlord boss fight, with randomized maps, loot and bosses and roguelite-style run resets.
Nightreign sold very well (2M units in 24 hours, 3.5M in five days, 5M+ by July 2025) and is rated Very Positive on Steam (about 82 percent of roughly 192k reviews). Critics were warmer than the Metacritic user base: Metascore 77 versus a mixed 6.8 user score, and 76-77 percent of OpenCritic critics recommended it. Praise centers on fast, addictive combat, movement, character variety and the Nightlord boss fights, especially with friends. Complaints center on heavy asset reuse from Elden Ring, RNG-driven loot, a weak solo and random-matchmaking experience, and a thin roguelite meta layer. Post-launch, the Steam crowd has soured on content cadence: the single Forsaken Hollows DLC (Dec 2025) was received less favorably (33 percent of OpenCritic critics recommended it), and recent negative reviews describe the game as abandoned or stale.
What players praise
- Fast, responsive Elden Ring combat plus a much-improved movement and traversal system that Steam reviewers say fixes the base game's clunkiness
- Ten-ish distinct Nightfarer classes (8 at launch, Undertaker and Scholar added by DLC) that play very differently and support many build styles
- Nightlord bosses, their stronger Everdark versions, and the soundtrack and arena presentation are frequently singled out as highlights
- Co-op with friends is the core strength; Metacritic users and Steam reviewers call it addictive and very replayable
- Condensed run length (around 40-45 minutes) gives a bite-sized, replayable take on Souls combat with randomized bosses, points of interest and Shifting Earth map variants
- No PvP, no microtransactions and no difficulty-locked paywalls; the roguelite loop drives players to hundreds or even 1000+ hours
- Good value perceived by fans at $39.99 given the hours logged, with long-term players reporting the game is in a better state than at launch
What players criticize
- Heavy reuse of enemies, weapons, bosses and environments from base Elden Ring; some call it a mode that should have been free or a mini-game for $40
- Solo play is widely described as frustrating because many bosses and the Deep of Night update feel tuned for a party
- Playing with randoms is chaotic: teammates quit after going down, and Deep of Night leaver penalties punish the remaining players
- Cheated or modded relics reportedly appear in higher-depth lobbies, with no ban or reporting system that players trust
- Loot is a roulette: players describe 40-minute runs with mostly irrelevant drops (boost incantations, weapon skills), making progression luck over skill
- Content drought: Steam reviews in 2026 say months passed with only two new characters, two new Nightlords and one new map, and the developer is accused of abandoning the game
- Deep of Night update drew complaints about the win/loss point ratio, enemy stat scaling at high Depths, and reskinned mutated enemies that mostly one-shot players
Distinctive features
- Souls-like combat reframed as a session-based co-op run: three in-game days, each ending in a boss, with a shrinking storm-like circle ('the Night') that forces movement
- Fixed roster of heroes with unique passives and ultimates rather than a blank-slate character, giving it a hero-shooter feel inside an action RPG
- Extraction-style pressure: limited time to level and gather gear before each night, no shopping or long exploration like Elden Ring
- Shifting Earth map variants and randomized points of interest/bosses layered onto a recognizable Limveld map
- Two distinct versions of each Nightlord (Everdark Sovereign), with a difficulty-escalating Deep of Night ranked mode added later
- Meta progression through relics and a hub (Roundtable Hold) instead of the usual Souls-like level-and-weapon grind
Divided opinions
- Whether it is a good roguelite: some reviewers call it a good spinoff but a weak roguelite compared with indie genre peers, while others love the loop
- Solo play: some players say the base game was workable solo, others say recent updates made it effectively unviable
- Design direction: fans who love combat praise the focus, while fans who want world-building and exploration find it stripped down
- Whether the price and reused assets are acceptable for a $40 standalone title
Repetition and friction
- Runs are long (up to about 40-60 minutes) and cannot be paused online, which is hard for players with limited time, especially in duo or trio
- Deep of Night penalties and leavers can force players to grind matches solo to advance
- Searching for a useful weapon or relic across a run is seen as repetitive and luck-driven
- Rushing to the next objective prevents reading abilities or comparing items, so the game feels hectic rather than tactical
- Content repetition: once the roster and map pool are exhausted, long-time players say runs blur together
- No in-game voice chat or cross-play make it harder to coordinate with friends or randoms (duo mode was missing at launch)
Hoped-for improvements
- More regular content: additional Nightlords, maps, characters and unused Elden Ring assets (fans explicitly ask for Shadow of the Erdtree weapons and the Everdark versions of remaining bosses)
- A real matchmaking and leaver system: penalties for quitting, reporting/bans for cheating, and fixes to the Deep of Night point loss when teammates leave
- In-game communication (voice or text chat) and better tools for playing with randoms
- Reworked loot so runs feel less RNG-dependent, with more varied and meaningful drops
- Solo balancing and better scaling for duo/solo, plus pausing or a safer way to handle interrupted runs (players note no pause in online runs)
- Broader map variety and event frequency, since enemy spawns and POIs become predictable
Launched May 29-30, 2025 at $39.99 on PC, PS4/PS5 and Xbox. Sales were strong (2M in 24 hours, 3.5M in 5 days, 5M+ by July 2025; 14th best-selling game of 2025 in the US per Wikipedia; SteamSpy-style estimate 2-5M owners on Steam alone; steam-revenue-calculator estimates about $223M gross on Steam, an order-of-magnitude figure). Critic scores are mostly favorable (GameSpot 9/10, VG247 5/5, Destructoid 8.5, PC Gamer 80, Eurogamer 4/5, IGN 7/10, NME and Guardian 3/5, PCGamesN 6/10), with lower marks for asset reuse and the roguelike structure. Metacritic user score is notably mixed at 6.8 from 1,404 ratings (56 percent positive). June 2025 updates added harder Everdark Sovereign bosses; the Deep of Night ranked mode and later balance changes divided the community. The Forsaken Hollows DLC (Dec 4, 2025) added two expedition bosses, a new map variant and the Undertaker and Scholar but was received less favorably than the base game; recent (2026) negative Steam reviews accuse the publisher of neglect. Awards include Japan Game Awards Excellence and nominations for Golden Joystick, The Game Awards 2025 and BAFTA Games Awards 2026 (Multiplayer). The OpenCritic page could not be fetched directly (my guessed page IDs were wrong and the web search budget was exhausted), so OpenCritic top critic average is null.

Tier list Part 4 (2025)
Elden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftware's co-op-focused soulslike roguelike spin-off, built on Elden Ring's combat with faster mobility, ultimates, distinct characters and a closing-zone battle-royale structure. He covered it at launch and has since revised his opinion upward thanks to updates, including better single-player support and a hard mode. He still has real complaints about repeated map content, the relic system and the lack of pause, but the core loop is so satisfying that he calls it an easy S tier. He also credits the lower-than-AAA price and a AAA studio trying something different and listening to feedback.
What the creator praises
- Crisp, satisfying FromSoftware combat; every sword swing feels great
- Weapons feel distinct, as in Elden Ring
- Distinct characters and added mobility, ultimates and faster pacing
- Zone-closing, time-limited run structure ending in a big final boss
- Quick runs: a full adventure in under an hour
- Final bosses and semi-weekly enhanced boss events with unique third phases
- Active post-launch support, single-player improvements, and a reduced non-AAA price
Issues raised by the creator
- Roguelike elements are mostly simple number tweaks and not very interesting
- Single map with repeated location layouts and not fully random; needs more content and bosses
- Easy once experienced in Souls games; gets repetitive before the hard mode
- Ranked difficulty locks you to your rank with no way to go back to lower ranks
- No pause and poor information, so you cannot inspect items or inventory mid-run
- Relic meta-progression is disorganized, unbalanced and poorly explained
- Some characters are much stronger than others
Design observations
- A big AAA studio adapting an indie genre using its actual game elements
- Mixes slow Souls-style combat with non-stop, fast run pacing, an unusual blend
- Battle-royale-style shrinking zone used in co-op PvE roguelike structure
Updated opinion
He covered it around launch and has since changed his thoughts substantially after updates (better single-player, hard mode); this is a re-evaluation resulting in S tier.
Top 10 of 2025 (#4)
Elden Ring Nightreign is a fast-paced cooperative soulslike roguelike where players race a shrinking map, collecting loot and levels to defeat the run's Night Lord. He admits it has the most nitpicks of any game on his list, yet the core FromSoftware combat is so satisfying that it lands at number four. He finds the solo experience surprisingly excellent despite the co-op marketing. He calls it a must-play for anyone craving top-notch Elden Ring gameplay, with the caveat that its format is not for every Soulslike fan.
What the creator praises
- Extremely satisfying FromSoft action gameplay, an infinitely replayable take on a popular title
- Still enjoys the repetitive early-run camps and generic enemies after 75 hours
- Plenty of weapons and fast-paced movement for a Soulslike
- Really fun bosses, especially the varied Night Lords
- Roguelike elements are minor but a nice addition
- Single-player experience is fantastic despite co-op focus
Issues raised by the creator
- Balance issues across characters, items, abilities and relics
- Maps feel repetitive
- Lacks important information for the player
- Dislikes the relic system and how it is presented
- Constant clock, little world building and a different long-term progression may put off some Soulslike fans
- DLC did not seem to fix as many issues as hoped (though he has not played it)
Design observations
- A Soulslike built around a shrinking-map clock with run-based levelling and loot
- Proves a roguelike structure can work with FromSoft combat as the core appeal
- Plays well solo even though marketed and designed primarily for co-op
