Community discussion

A fast run-and-gun 2D action-platformer roguelite from Veewo Games (published by Team17) where you descend a neon-soaked Greek-myth-meets-cyberpunk dungeon collecting hundreds of items, hatching pets and stacking synergies.

Neon Abyss is Very Positive on Steam (about 86% of roughly 23.6k reviews) and Mixed-to-Average with critics (Metacritic PC 74 from 12 reviews, user score 6.6). Players and critics agree it is a fun, colourful, chaotic Binding of Isaac / Enter the Gungeon-style shooter with a huge item pool and a great soundtrack, and that it is cheap and often on deep sale. The recurring complaints are visual clutter (enemy bullets hard to tell from yours), items that are mostly shallow 'chance to do X when Y' effects, clunky controls with no dodge, and long-standing bugs including some reports of lost saves. Support has effectively stopped: DLC landed in 2021 (Alter Ego) plus later cosmetic/character packs, Veewo moved on to Neon Abyss 2 (Early Access from July 2025), and recent Steam reviews (last 30 days) are Mixed at about 68%, with reviewers noting bugs are years old and the game has not been updated for a very long time.

What players praise

  • Fast, fluid run-and-gun gameplay that is immediately fun and works well in short sessions (one reviewer calls it a go-to when they have 30 minutes)
  • Huge pool of weapons, items and abilities (500-600+) that gives runs a different feel, with some strong build-defining combos that make you feel invincible
  • Striking neon/cyberpunk pixel art and a high-energy soundtrack that many reviewers single out
  • Pet hatching and evolution system and the quirky mini-games/shops add personality and extra ways to power up
  • Varied bosses and dungeon evolution system (choices change the ruleset of later runs), plus a progression/unlock tree that keeps you coming back
  • Distinct playable characters, including DLC characters like the katana-wielding Saya whose melee playstyle is well liked
  • Very good value: frequently discounted to about 5-7 USD and players report 20-80+ hours

What players criticize

  • Hard to distinguish your own bullets from enemy projectiles; enemy bullets are layered under the player's, so late-game screens become unreadable
  • Many items are shallow 'chance to do X when you do Y' effects or simple damage/key/coin conversions, with few creative interactions despite the advertised unlimited synergies
  • Item descriptions are hidden unless you use a specific character or find a specific item, so you pick among 500+ items by name and icon alone
  • Long-standing bugs (some reported as 6+ years old): falling through platforms stops working, broken menu/controller input, collection or progression blocked
  • Reports of save data being wiped or progression lost, including after cloud/Epic versions
  • Clunky controls and aiming: no dedicated dodge button, awkward default controller layout, inconsistent hitboxes, movement described as slow by some
  • Uneven economy: rooms give few coins while keys cost about 30, so a poor early luck stretch leaves you weak for the rest of the run
  • Procedural generation is repetitive with limited room and environment variety, and the English translation is described as weak by some

Distinctive features

  • Dungeon evolution system in which choices alter the ruleset of the dungeon in later runs, plus the hub bar that modifies runs
  • Pet egg hatching and evolution as a core power-up loop alongside guns and items
  • Greek-mythology gods reimagined with a neon cyberpunk aesthetic
  • Wisdom/violence mechanic tied to certain characters, where taking damage converts charge and can ruin builds
  • Casino-style slot and mini-game gates for chests and doors, plus a card/gacha-style cheat system
  • A 'thriving, not surviving' design ethos praised by PC Invasion: a platformer-shooter blend of Isaac-style items with run-and-gun movement

Divided opinions

  • Synergies: fans say builds get wild, critics and many negative reviewers say most items are dull and rarely combine
  • Difficulty: some find it about the right challenge, others find it easy once patterns are learned, while item RNG swings runs between overpowered and hopeless
  • Controls and feel: described as tight by some and clunky or slow by others
  • Comparison to Enter the Gungeon / Binding of Isaac: a fresh platformer take to some, a weaker imitation to others

Repetition and friction

  • Runs grow long (around an hour, more with mini-games) as deeper levels unlock, and reviewers find the repeated levels and bosses repetitive after a while
  • Mini-games and challenge rooms that sometimes break or bar access to loot feel like small inconveniences stacked on the run
  • All enemies spawning at once on room entry overwhelms players, and screens fill with effects
  • Achievements such as die 99 times or enter a room 999 times are called grindy and poorly designed; the upgrade accumulation was called a long slog in early press
  • No way to save and resume mid-run (raised in the top-voted Steam review) makes hour-long runs awkward for players with limited time

Hoped-for improvements

  • Add a dodge/dash button and more precise aiming and hitbox behaviour
  • Render enemy projectiles over player bullets or make them visually distinct to fix readability
  • Show item descriptions to all players by default (or via an in-game codex) instead of gating them behind a character or item
  • Make items interact more meaningfully and cut filler 'chance to' effects; make different characters matter more
  • Fix the old platform-drop, menu-input and save-loss bugs and optimize performance (lag spikes reported)
  • Rebalance the coin/key economy and improve achievement design; players also asked for mod support and the ability to save and resume runs

Note the data file lists 2022 but the game launched July 14, 2020 on PC, Switch, PS4 and Xbox One (Windows only on Steam). Launch press was broadly positive (Metacritic PC 74, top scores 85 CD-Action, 81 Hooked Gamers, 80 from Hardcore Gamer, The Indie Game Website and The Games Machine; lows 70 PC Games and Multiplayer.it, and a 40 from Screen Rant). Critics praised item variety and presentation while noting repetitive procedural levels, visual chaos, PS4 performance issues and lack of a dodge button. Steam revenue estimates (steam-revenue-calculator, Boxleiter method) are about 4.7M gross / 1.4M net, and SteamSpy estimates 2-5 million owners; treat as order-of-magnitude. Post-launch: the Alter Ego pack (2021) and further DLC (Lovable Rogues Pack, Chrono Trap) were added, but recent reviewers say no meaningful update in a very long time and some bugs persist; it was also given away on Epic Games Store at one point, which reviewers mention. Neon Abyss 2 entered Early Access on July 17, 2025 and a reviewer said it is not recommended; the Steam forum shows 677 problem-report threads covering controller mapping, PS5 controller, resolution and platform-drop bugs.

Tier list Part 1 (2023)

Neon Abyss is a 2D action dungeon-crawler roguelike with an 80s neon aesthetic. He finds it visually fun with great music and bosses, but says the gameplay concept is not unique compared to similar games. He calls it the most basic, solid baseline on the board and recommends it to dungeon-crawler fans, without stating a tier letter.

What the creator praises

  • Fun neon, 80s-flavoured visuals
  • Great music
  • Cool bosses and some cool secret bosses
  • Some weapons and passives are genuinely fun
  • Does everything pretty well overall, a solid experience for dungeon-crawler fans
  • Light grind for unlocks that is not too hard

Issues raised by the creator

  • No particularly unique concept compared to other games in the genre
  • Many weapons are not that fun despite the trailer making them look crazy
  • Characters do not feel very different from one another
  • Passives and abilities are uneven in how fun they are
  • Requires a bit of grinding

Design observations

  • Its notable trait is polish and presentation rather than novel design
  • Serves as the baseline for a competent, generic dungeon-crawler roguelike

Updated opinion

He muses about placing it slightly over Moonlighter, then backtracks because he had a better experience with Moonlighter.
