Resumen de la comunidad
Texto original · InglésA one-man-made (Moppin) vertical arcade roguelite where you fall down a procedurally generated well, using gunboots as both jump and weapon, in a stark black/white/red pixel style.
Texto original · InglésDownwell is received as a small arcade classic: Steam sits at Overwhelmingly Positive (about 96.5% of roughly 8,600 reviews), OpenCritic at 83 (84% of critics recommend) and Metacritic PC at 81, with stronger scores on iOS (91) and Switch (88). Critics and players praise the tight, instantly readable controls, the one-more-run loop and the style/module variety. Complaints cluster around high difficulty and run-to-run luck, thin long-term progression and power-up pool, and a few missing quality-of-life options on PC. Metacritic user score is notably lower (6.8, Mixed) than Steam, suggesting a split between fans and people who bounce off the speed. It is a finished, cheap game (about $2.99 on Steam) that has been ported widely (iOS, PC, Android, PS4/Vita, Switch, PS5) rather than an early-access or abandoned title.
Lo que elogian los jugadores
- Texto original · InglésExtremely responsive, simple controls: left/right plus one button that both jumps and fires the gunboots, so movement and combat are the same verb
- Texto original · InglésAddictive short runs that invite 'just one more try'; good for quick sessions and works in a vertical display mode on Switch
- Texto original · InglésDistinctive, minimalist look (black, white and red with swappable palettes) and a strong soundtrack, including the music cutting in the moment you land
- Texto original · InglésDeceptively deep mechanics: combos, gem collection, ammo management and stomping enemies reward skilled play
- Texto original · InglésStyles, modules and perks that change how a run plays, giving variety within a very small game
- Texto original · InglésBargain price and heavy replay value; many Steam reviewers report owning it on several platforms and playing for over 100 hours
- Texto original · InglésHard mode and a meaningful final boss give a reason to keep going for players who master it
- Texto original · InglésPolished feel for a solo-developed debut; awards included Destructoid Best Mobile Game of 2015 and GDC Best Debut nominations
- Texto original · InglésPlays well as a low-commitment pick-up game: several Steam reviewers play it while waiting in queues or alongside podcasts, and some own it on multiple platforms
Lo que critican los jugadores
- Texto original · InglésVery punishing: tiny health pool and fast pace mean one or two mistakes end a run, which many players find unfair or overwhelming
- Texto original · InglésRuns feel luck dependent (level layout, upgrade offers, shop items), so skill cannot always rescue a bad run
- Texto original · InglésEnemy density late in a run can make it hard to spot your character and produces deaths players call unavoidable
- Texto original · InglésSome color palettes reduce readability, since gameplay relies on three colors and a few palettes only have two
- Texto original · InglésPC port lacks basics: no proper options menu, no jump remapping on keyboard, no screen shake toggle according to negative Steam reviews
- Texto original · InglésHit detection and movement complaints from some players when the screen is busy
Características distintivas
- Texto original · InglésGunboots: the jump doubles as the weapon and as a fall-slowing tool, fusing platforming and shooting into one input
- Texto original · InglésVertical, downward-only descent structure with short runs, closer to an arcade score-attack than a typical exploratory roguelike
- Texto original · InglésStrict limited palette (black/white/red, blue for water) with many unlockable palettes that act as collectible skins
- Texto original · InglésCombo-and-gem economy where stomping chains without touching ground drives both score and currency
- Texto original · InglésOriginally designed for mobile and vertical play, and it still plays well on phones and rotated displays
- Texto original · InglésSoundtrack that kicks in on landing, tying audio directly to the core movement loop
Opiniones divididas
- Texto original · InglésDifficulty: fans call it tough but fair and mastery-driven, while detractors call it luck-heavy and overwhelming (Steam 96.5% positive versus Metacritic user score 6.8)
- Texto original · InglésDepth versus repetition: Eurogamer and Nintendo Life describe real depth, Game Informer and others find the run structure thin after the first hours
- Texto original · InglésMinimalist presentation: praised as charming and stylish, but the limited palettes and audio bother some players
- Texto original · InglésWhether the game suits PC: PC Games felt it was cut to mobile needs and felt odd with PC controls, while many Steam players love it
Repetición y obstáculos
- Texto original · InglésReaching proficiency can feel like grinding through many quick deaths with little carried over between runs
- Texto original · InglésRepetitive runs despite procedural generation, noted by Game Informer
- Texto original · InglésRandom level, shop and upgrade rolls that some players feel do not reward learning from mistakes
- Texto original · InglésThe pace is too fast and stressful for some, who describe it as nearly unplayable without inhuman reactions
- Texto original · InglésForced screen shake and missing accessibility/control options on PC frustrate a few players
Mejoras esperadas
- Texto original · InglésA full options menu on PC: key remapping (jump cannot be rebound), screen shake toggle and other accessibility settings
- Texto original · InglésStronger persistent progression or meta-unlocks so repeated runs feel cumulative (Game Informer cited lack of long-term incentive)
- Texto original · InglésA larger and better balanced perk and weapon pool; reviewers note a few options are clearly stronger than the rest
- Texto original · InglésBetter readability in busy rooms and in alternate palettes, with gameplay-critical colors kept distinct
- Texto original · InglésMore difficulty options or an easier entry ramp for newcomers who find it too hard
- Texto original · InglésBetter support for widescreen/horizontal displays, where the vertical aspect ratio is awkward
Texto original · InglésLaunched October 2015 on iOS and Windows (Android January 2016, PS4/Vita May 2016, later Switch and PS5) to broad acclaim, winning TouchArcade Game of the Week and Destructoid Best Mobile Game of 2015 and earning Game Awards and GDC nominations. The critic scores are strongest on iOS and Switch and lowest on PS4/PC, consistent with its mobile-first design; PC Games was a notable dissenter at 70% over the PC feel. Metacritic user reviews are mixed (55% positive, 29% mixed, 16% negative on about 198 ratings) while Steam remains very high, and recent Steam negatives in 2025-26 still focus on speed, luck and missing PC options, suggesting no major control/options patch has resolved them. Steam estimates (SteamSpy 200k-500k owners; steam-revenue-calculator about $817k gross and $241k net to the developer) are rough Boxleiter-style figures across Steam only and exclude mobile and console, where the game sold widely.

Texto original · InglésTier list Part 1 (2023)
Texto original · InglésDownwell is a minimalist roguelike where you fall down a deep well instead of climbing, using only left, right and jump, with the jump button also firing your gun downward. He thinks it is amazingly well designed and feels like a game-jam idea turned into a fun game. It is punishing and purely skill-based, and it becomes repetitive because there are no distinct builds. He finished it once and does not plan to return, so he places it high in D tier, explicitly not counting its low price.
Lo que elogia el creador
- Texto original · InglésVery minimalistic yet amazingly well designed
- Texto original · InglésUnique gimmick of descending as fast as possible rather than advancing forward
- Texto original · InglésSimple controls: left, right, jump, with jump again shooting downward
- Texto original · InglésDifferent weapons and upgrades found across runs
- Texto original · InglésSkill-based: progress comes from mastering the mechanics, never from feeling overpowered
- Texto original · InglésFeels like a quick game-jam idea turned into a really fun game
Problemas señalados por el creador
- Texto original · InglésGets very repetitive since there are no unique builds
- Texto original · InglésProgress is only about how far down you can go
- Texto original · InglésVery punishing: you have little health and take damage easily
- Texto original · InglésThe well is quite deep; he finished it once and had no desire to return
Observaciones de diseño
- Texto original · InglésInverts the usual direction of games by making the goal going down as fast as possible
- Texto original · InglésSingle-button-combo design where jumping and shooting share an input
- Texto original · InglésPure skill-based roguelike with no power fantasy
