Synthèse des discussions

Texte original · AnglaisA third-person action RPG wrapped in a roguelite deck-builder, where a mysterious Dealer lays out a card-built board-game dungeon and you fight real-time combat whenever the cards demand it.

Texte original · AnglaisCritics and players largely agree it is a clear, more ambitious step up from the 2015 original, with a Metacritic score of 80 and Steam 'Very Positive' (about 84% of roughly 5.8k reviews in the local data). The atmosphere, writing, narrator and the unusual card-as-dungeon loop are the main draws. The persistent complaints are combat that is serviceable but shallow and repetitive, randomness that can ruin a run, and bloat or grind in longer play. The developer Defiant stopped making new games in 2019 and only maintains the title, so the game is effectively in maintenance mode (not early access). The Steam store page showed recent reviews as only Mixed (66% of 15) against Very Positive overall, which suggests a small, aging player base with some lingering technical complaints.

Ce que les joueurs apprécient

  • Texte original · AnglaisAtmosphere and presentation: art, music, sound design and the Dealer narrator's personality are repeatedly called out as the standout feature
  • Texte original · AnglaisA genuinely unusual gameplay loop: you build a hand of encounter and equipment cards, then navigate a board-game map that unfolds like a choose-your-own-adventure
  • Texte original · AnglaisStrong writing and story-driven scenarios (20+ campaign quests plus endless mode) with varied outcomes built from the cards you unlock
  • Texte original · AnglaisNew mini-game-style challenges (dice, pendulum, wheel) add skill-based variety beyond the original's card-shuffle challenge
  • Texte original · AnglaisCompanions with their own questlines and abilities improve both exploration and combat compared with the first game
  • Texte original · AnglaisUnlockable gear that levels up and token challenges give a steady reason to keep unlocking cards and equipment
  • Texte original · AnglaisCombat grows more satisfying in later acts once riposte and block-breaking mechanics open up (Arkham-style comparison appears in several Steam reviews)
  • Texte original · AnglaisCharacter customization and more diverse cast were noted as improvements

Ce que les joueurs critiquent

  • Texte original · AnglaisCombat is the weakest pillar: Arkham-lite, one-enemy-at-a-time feel, repetitive and often just spam-attack once you out-gear encounters (echoed by PC Gamer and Game Informer per Wikipedia summary)
  • Texte original · AnglaisRandomness and luck-based challenges can be run-killing or feel unfair in later campaigns; GameSpot noted some quests lean too heavily on luck
  • Texte original · AnglaisLate-game bloat: decks of 20+ cards with no search or filter make pre-run deck building a chore
  • Texte original · AnglaisTechnical rough edges in some Steam reviews: long loading screens before each fight, enemy AI breaking (reported fix: turn vsync on), bugged dice rerolls, an unlocked sword not appearing in equipment
  • Texte original · AnglaisSluggish-feeling hero evade and chaotic, hard-to-read fights in crowded encounters according to negative reviewers
  • Texte original · AnglaisProgression and grind: Wccftech scored it 60 citing unsatisfying progression, punishing randomness and clunky combat; some Steam reviewers call it overpriced at $30 and repetitive
  • Texte original · AnglaisLater campaigns spike in difficulty and feel unfair to some players, leading to frustration (and grinding for gold-token gear) before progress is possible

Caractéristiques distinctives

  • Texte original · AnglaisThe dungeon is literally a tabletop built from cards that the Dealer lays out, and the cards you choose determine encounters, loot and events
  • Texte original · AnglaisA sitting-in-the-Dealer's-wagon framing with a charismatic narrator who comments on your successes and failures
  • Texte original · AnglaisHybrid of deckbuilding and real-time third-person action combat, often compared to Arkham-style fighting with a card-game shell
  • Texte original · AnglaisTarot-flavoured theming and choose-your-own-adventure storytelling rather than a pure arena roguelike
  • Texte original · AnglaisHand-built campaign scenarios with persistent unlocks, rather than fully random runs, plus a separate Endless mode
  • Texte original · AnglaisSteam tags label it a roguelike deckbuilder, but most players describe it as closer to a narrative adventure with roguelite unlock progression

Points qui divisent

  • Texte original · AnglaisCombat: some find it fun and increasingly rewarding, others find it the weakest, clunkiest part of the game
  • Texte original · AnglaisDifficulty and RNG: some enjoy the tension and sense of accomplishment, others see late campaigns as unfair and want to uninstall
  • Texte original · AnglaisValue: recommended by many at full price as a unique experience, but some say wait for a sale at $15 or less
  • Texte original · AnglaisRoguelike label: players split on whether it satisfies roguelike cravings or plays more like a campaign-based adventure

Répétition et contraintes

  • Texte original · AnglaisRepeating the same lock-on combat over many encounters; some players mash attack to get through it
  • Texte original · AnglaisScrolling a large card collection to build a deck before each run
  • Texte original · AnglaisLong loading and intro sequences each time you retry a level
  • Texte original · AnglaisLuck-heavy mini-games that must be passed for story progress and can be frustrating
  • Texte original · AnglaisGrinding the campaign to unlock the cards and gear needed for later, harder scenarios
  • Texte original · AnglaisEndless mode's item degradation making some weapon types feel pointless

Améliorations espérées

  • Texte original · AnglaisDeeper, more varied combat: more enemy variety and more tactical options beyond attack, counter and block
  • Texte original · AnglaisDeck-management quality of life: a search or filter for the growing card collection and a faster way to build hands
  • Texte original · AnglaisShorter or skippable loading screens and intro animations when restarting encounters
  • Texte original · AnglaisBetter balance for Endless mode, where item degradation makes daggers nearly useless
  • Texte original · AnglaisLess punishing RNG or more mitigation tools so one bad draw does not sink a long run
  • Texte original · AnglaisBug fixes, since the studio is in maintenance mode and some bugs reported in 2025 remain

Texte original · AnglaisLaunched November 2017 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One to generally favourable reviews (Metacritic 80 from 27 critics; user score 7.0 from about 99 ratings). It won an AGDA Game of the Year award and was listed among Kotaku's top 10 games of 2017 per the Steam page. Defiant reported Hand of Fate 2 earned about 40% more revenue than the original in its first six months. Three story DLC packs followed (Outlands and Outsiders, The Servant and the Beast, A Cold Hearth). Defiant stopped making new games in July 2019 and moved to a caretaker mode, so the game gets no active development; in 2025 it only began publishing the spin-off Hordes of Fate. Steam's recent reviews were Mixed on the store page, driven by technical complaints like load times and bugs. Third-party estimates (Steam revenue calculator) put gross revenue around $1.67M and SteamSpy owners at 200k to 500k, but these are Boxleiter-style estimates and exclude console sales. No OpenCritic score was confirmed, so it is left null. Metacritic 80 (27 critics) and user 7.0 (99 ratings) were re-verified on the Metacritic page; individual outlet scores in 'other' were not independently re-checked and the AGDA/Kotaku award claims are unverified.

Texte original · AnglaisTier list Part 1 (2023)

Texte original · AnglaisHand of Fate 2 is the sequel to Hand of Fate, a deck-building game mixed with real-time action combat. He tried it because he likes deck builders and the reviews were strong. It keeps the same vibe as the first game but improves nearly everything. He enjoyed it, yet the clash between slow strategic deck building and fast action still bothers him. He places it in low B and would not recommend it as a deck-building game.

Ce que le créateur apprécie

  • Texte original · AnglaisClearly better than the first game overall and more fun to play
  • Texte original · AnglaisVisuals are much more polished
  • Texte original · AnglaisDesign aspects are much improved across the board
  • Texte original · AnglaisDeck-building portion is far more extensive
  • Texte original · AnglaisCooler events
  • Texte original · AnglaisAction combat is a lot more fun and feels almost like a proper action game

Problèmes relevés par le créateur

  • Texte original · AnglaisStill super slow, which is by design
  • Texte original · AnglaisDeck building and action genres clash: strategy wants focus, action wants speed
  • Texte original · AnglaisGame fights with its own style
  • Texte original · AnglaisNot his favorite and he would not recommend it as a deck builder
  • Texte original · AnglaisSequel changed little in vibe

Observations sur la conception

  • Texte original · AnglaisMerges a deck-building/event-card structure with real-time action combat
  • Texte original · AnglaisSequel improves on every aspect of the first without changing its core identity

Avis actualisé

Texte original · AnglaisDiscussed right after the first Hand of Fate, which he put in mid C; this sequel moves up to low B as a re-evaluation of the same concept.
