Synthèse des discussions
Texte original · AnglaisA turn-based dungeon-crawling roguelike by Jaspel where you play a rat named Purse and win fights by arranging items in a limited grid backpack, with a town-rebuilding meta layer.
Texte original · AnglaisBackpack Hero is liked by players (Steam Very Positive, about 86% of roughly 8.5k reviews) and received mixed-to-favorable critic scores (Metacritic 76 from 6 reviews, OpenCritic 71 with 63% recommending). The grid-based inventory puzzle is widely called inventive and addictive, and the five characters play differently. Criticism centers on a clunky interface, a slow and grindy story-mode unlock loop, a half-baked town, bugs and repetition. The game left early access in Nov 2023 and reached consoles in mid 2024, but recent Steam reviews say it has had no updates since roughly Dec 2024, so many recent negatives are about abandonment, unfixed bugs and a game that feels unfinished. A modding scene partly fills the gap.
Ce que les joueurs apprécient
- Texte original · AnglaisThe backpack-as-inventory mechanic: fitting items, synergies and adjacency into a grid works like a Tetris-style puzzle and is described as surprisingly addictive
- Texte original · AnglaisFive characters (Purse, Tote, Satchel, Pochette, CR-8) with distinct playstyles; Satchel's charm builds and Pochette's pet builds are singled out as strong
- Texte original · AnglaisHundreds of items and lots of build variety, giving a strong 'one more run' pull
- Texte original · AnglaisEasy to understand yet deep enough for veterans; challenge modifiers welcome both masochists and players wanting easier runs
- Texte original · AnglaisCharming pixel art and friendly characters, noted by Eurogamer and other critics
- Texte original · AnglaisGood value in raw playtime: 100 percent completion takes roughly 35-60 hours and some players have sunk hundreds or over a thousand hours
- Texte original · AnglaisActive modding community and Steam Workshop support
- Texte original · AnglaisSeen by fans as having set the template for later 'backpack battler' games
Ce que les joueurs critiquent
- Texte original · AnglaisMany bugs, including game-breaking softlocks, and reports of an NPC or building (e.g. the temple) that can never be unlocked
- Texte original · AnglaisFeels unfinished: players say it should still be labelled early access or beta
- Texte original · AnglaisInterface is clunky; critics at PC Invasion and others cite a persistently irritating UI, and Switch controls are described as unwieldy
- Texte original · AnglaisStory mode and meta progression are slow and padded, forcing repeated runs to unlock items, heroes and deeper dungeons
- Texte original · AnglaisShallow story and forgettable NPCs; a bland soundtrack per some reviewers
- Texte original · AnglaisHeavy RNG and slow levelling make builds depend on luck
- Texte original · AnglaisDevelopers appear to have stopped patching, leaving balance issues and bugs unresolved
- Texte original · AnglaisController support is wonky, including on Steam Deck, with cursor and menu problems
- Texte original · AnglaisShort and ramps up too fast per some reviewers: difficulty escalates quickly while leveling is slow, so runs can feel unwinnable without lucky rolls
Caractéristiques distinctives
- Texte original · AnglaisInventory management is itself the core combat mechanic, often compared to the briefcase in Resident Evil 4, rather than a side system
- Texte original · AnglaisFunctions like a deckbuilder where the backpack replaces the deck; critics call it one of the most inventive deckbuilders
- Texte original · AnglaisPositioning and adjacency of items in the grid determine synergies, so space itself is a resource (for example empty room reserved for arrows)
- Texte original · AnglaisPet-based, charm-based and mana-based playstyles each change how you pack the bag
- Texte original · AnglaisMix of Slay the Spire-style runs with a Moonlighter-like town rebuilt from loot
Points qui divisent
- Texte original · AnglaisWhether the story mode is a good tutorial and progression path or unnecessary padding
- Texte original · AnglaisWhether the core loop is deep and endlessly replayable or repetitive after a few runs
- Texte original · AnglaisWhether the game deserves a recommendation at full price given abandonment, with many suggesting buying on sale
- Texte original · AnglaisWhether bugs are tolerable roughness or deal-breakers; some players report none while others hit softlocks
Répétition et contraintes
- Texte original · AnglaisStory mode grind: repeating easy early runs, often on the same character and build, to unlock deeper dungeons and gear
- Texte original · AnglaisTown building and navigating many buildings and menus, plus tracking which items to bring for research
- Texte original · AnglaisEarly-game rewards feel stingy and the first hours can feel slow
- Texte original · AnglaisGameplay stays essentially the same across the game, so repetition sets in after the first runs
- Texte original · AnglaisArchery and magic styles impose extra space or mana restrictions that some find irritating
- Texte original · AnglaisChasing all achievements, including the RNG-gated unlock of CR-8 late in story mode
Améliorations espérées
- Texte original · AnglaisBug fixes and stability patches, plus clearer developer communication about the game's status
- Texte original · AnglaisA way to lock or ban unwanted items from the reward pool so it does not get clogged, for example after the Wizard School or Archery Lessons runs
- Texte original · AnglaisA balance pass so more builds and heroes are viable, especially weaker ones like Tote and the mana or archery styles
- Texte original · AnglaisStreamlined town and meta progression with less menu-hopping, and better in-game explanation of systems like the settlement
- Texte original · AnglaisRun seeding and better modding support, including mods working in story mode
- Texte original · AnglaisBetter controller and Steam Deck support and improved translations
Texte original · AnglaisStarted as a game jam project, raised about $224k on Kickstarter against a $20k goal, entered early access in Aug 2022 and launched 1.0 on Nov 14, 2023 for PC, Mac and Linux, with Switch, PlayStation and Xbox versions in 2024. Critics on Metacritic (PC and Switch both 76) praised the novelty and charm; a few (PlayStation Universe, PC Invasion, Video Chums) flagged unclear explanations, UI and repetitive dungeons. Wikipedia says updates have continued, but Steam reviewers in 2026 say the last update was around December 2024 and call the game abandoned, which has driven a wave of critical recent reviews. Sources conflict on this point, so treat the abandonment claim as player-reported. Steam price is $19.99 with the store listing Pretty Soon and IndieArk as publishers while Metacritic lists Different Tales.

Texte original · AnglaisTier list Part 1 (2023)
Texte original · AnglaisBackpack Hero is a turn-based item-management roguelike where the placement of items in your backpack grid determines their effects in combat. You pick from several characters, explore a dungeon, collect loot, and fight through to a final boss. He loves the concept and the effort behind the character variety, but the more he played the more he was bothered by how many found items are useless to your current build. He keeps enjoying it but struggles to return to it, and places it in C tier as a niche game that is not for everyone.
Ce que le créateur apprécie
- Texte original · AnglaisBackpack placement creates unique item effects and combinations between runs
- Texte original · AnglaisEach character plays drastically differently, almost like a new game
- Texte original · AnglaisBuilds are fun and it is easy to feel overpowered when they come together
- Texte original · AnglaisLarge amount of effort and content across characters
- Texte original · AnglaisGameplay is the focus, with the concept itself being an idea he loves
Problèmes relevés par le créateur
- Texte original · AnglaisMany items are specific to other builds and useless for yours, which is frustrating
- Texte original · AnglaisSome builds are broken, and without the right items you are weak (all-in-or-nothing feel)
- Texte original · AnglaisDungeon exploration is minimalistic and he is not a fan of it
- Texte original · AnglaisHard to come back to despite enjoying his sessions
- Texte original · AnglaisNiche appeal, not for everybody
Observations sur la conception
- Texte original · AnglaisSpatial inventory placement as the core combat system
- Texte original · AnglaisCharacters so different each feels like a separate game
