Synthèse des discussions
Texte original · AnglaisKlei Entertainment's hand-drawn, Tim Burton-flavoured wilderness survival game with permadeath, procedurally generated worlds, and no tutorial.
Texte original · AnglaisDon't Starve is regarded as a modern survival classic: Steam shows 'Overwhelmingly Positive' at about 96.5% across roughly 113k reviews, and critics landed in the high 70s (Metacritic 79 on PC, Generally Favorable). Praise centres on the gothic art style, the discovery-driven learning loop and the tension of permadeath. Both players and critics flag the lack of guidance and punishing early hours as the main barrier, and several say the loop turns tedious once survival is mastered. The original single-player game is effectively in maintenance mode, since Klei's content updates moved to the multiplayer Don't Starve Together. Many recent Steam reviewers, even positive ones, tell newcomers to buy DST instead, even for solo play. It is not early access; it released in full in April 2013 after an alpha/beta period.
Ce que les joueurs apprécient
- Texte original · AnglaisDistinctive hand-drawn, Burton-esque gothic art with fluid animation, plus a gramophone-style soundtrack and strong atmosphere
- Texte original · AnglaisPermadeath loop where every death teaches something specific (bees, darkness, hunger), making learning itself the reward
- Texte original · AnglaisSurvival systems that interlock: hunger, sanity, health, seasons, day/night cycle and creature behaviour create emergent stories
- Texte original · AnglaisNo hand-holding; players respect that Klei kept a cohesive identity instead of chasing mainstream accessibility
- Texte original · AnglaisHuge replayability from randomly generated worlds, many unlockable characters with different perks, and adjustable world settings
- Texte original · AnglaisEverything has multiple uses (monsters can be turned against each other, even death can be exploited), which rewards experimentation
- Texte original · AnglaisStrong value, often very cheap on sale; expansions like Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked and Hamlet are described as near full games
Ce que les joueurs critiquent
- Texte original · AnglaisAlmost no tutorial or in-game explanation; many mechanics (bird cage for food, bunnymen hostility to meat carriers, final Adventure level in darkness) are only learnable via the wiki or trial and error
- Texte original · AnglaisEarly hours are brutal and feel unfair because death often comes from not knowing rules rather than player error
- Texte original · AnglaisLosing a long run to a hidden mechanic feels especially demoralising after dozens of hours
- Texte original · AnglaisAdventure mode is seen as poorly designed: fetch-quest errands across levels, then a surprise difficulty spike
- Texte original · AnglaisOnce you can survive indefinitely the game loses purpose and becomes chores; a common critique is weak long-term goals
- Texte original · AnglaisClunky real-time combat, especially clicking on moving targets with mouse and keyboard
- Texte original · AnglaisSome reports of crashes (e.g. loading worlds with caves via DST) and a black-screen lockup bug in recent negative Steam reviews
- Texte original · AnglaisSome players feel abandoned: the single-player game receives no new content while DST keeps being updated
- Texte original · AnglaisBase game feels dated next to Don't Starve Together (e.g. weaker crafting menu and quality of life), per reviewers who played both
Caractéristiques distinctives
- Texte original · AnglaisSurvival-crafting game with roguelike permadeath and procedural worlds but no levelling meta-progression; the only thing you carry over is knowledge
- Texte original · AnglaisSanity as a third resource alongside health and hunger, with hallucinated monsters and shifting behaviour
- Texte original · AnglaisDarkness is lethal: night without light means death, which defines the pacing of every day
- Texte original · AnglaisSeasonal cycle (autumn, winter, spring, summer) each with its own threats, forcing long-term planning
- Texte original · AnglaisArt direction of a storybook with gothic undertones, with a cast of oddly distinct playable characters
- Texte original · AnglaisEmergent, systemic monster ecosystem where hostile creatures can be baited to fight each other
Points qui divisent
- Texte original · AnglaisDeliberate obtuseness: fans call it rewarding discovery, detractors call it artificial difficulty (even a 7/10 PopMatters-style review called the learning process laborious)
- Texte original · AnglaisOriginal vs Don't Starve Together: some prefer the simpler, less bloated original, while many recommend DST even for solo play because of more content and ongoing updates
- Texte original · AnglaisWhether it is really a roguelike: permadeath and procedural worlds say yes, but the open-ended sandbox survival structure says otherwise
- Texte original · AnglaisPunishing permadeath: thrilling for some, demoralising for others as runs get longer
Répétition et contraintes
- Texte original · AnglaisConstant resource gathering and base upkeep (chopping, mining, food, fuel) that becomes chores once mastered
- Texte original · AnglaisLearning by dying repeatedly with little carried over between runs, which some find repetitive rather than empowering
- Texte original · AnglaisNeeding a second monitor with a wiki open to progress efficiently
- Texte original · AnglaisAdventure mode fetch-quest grind across multiple levels
- Texte original · AnglaisSolo play can feel repetitive and unstructured; several reviewers say the game works better in multiplayer
Améliorations espérées
- Texte original · AnglaisBetter in-game teaching or hinting (food values, creature behaviour) so players do not need a wiki or mods like craft pot and minimap
- Texte original · AnglaisClearer feedback on why a run ended so failure teaches specific lessons instead of feeling like repetition
- Texte original · AnglaisNew content and updates for the original game instead of leaving it behind DST
- Texte original · AnglaisMore mid and late-game goals beyond surviving longer, and a redesigned Adventure mode
- Texte original · AnglaisQuality-of-life features built into the base game that players currently get via mods (geometric placement, minimap, displayed food values)
- Texte original · AnglaisStability fixes for crashes and the black-screen bug
Texte original · AnglaisLaunched to Generally Favorable reviews (Metacritic high 70s), with critics praising the art and addictive loop and criticising the steep, poorly explained learning curve. It became a long-running Steam hit (about 96.5% positive, Steam Spy owners 2-5M, a revenue estimate of roughly 13.9M USD gross, which is a modeled figure and not audited). Klei focused later development on Don't Starve Together and released the Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked and Hamlet expansions for the original, but the base game now gets little or no new content, which feeds recent negative reviews complaining of abandonment. It is on PC, Mac, Linux, consoles, Switch and iOS. The Metacritic figures conflict between sources: Steam lists 79 for PC, while the fetched Metacritic page showed 78 and user 7.1, apparently for the PS4 edition; a PC user score could not be verified and is left null. the base-game OpenCritic figure could not be verified and is left null; the OpenCritic page fetched was for the Switch edition (80).

Texte original · AnglaisTier list Part 1 (2023)
Texte original · AnglaisDon't Starve is a well-known survival game with roguelike elements where you build a camp and try to survive a hostile world. PepperHead admits it is the one game on the list he has barely played and says he probably should not have included it. From his limited time it was fun and challenging, though it did not grab him right away. He parks it in the middle of B tier for lack of enough experience to judge it fairly, acknowledging it could rank higher.

Problèmes relevés par le créateur

- Texte original · AnglaisNeeds a lot of playtime to grasp, and it did not hook him immediately
- Texte original · AnglaisHe lacks the experience to say much about it
Observations sur la conception
- Texte original · AnglaisSurvival-focused loop where the constant goal is simply staying alive rather than combat depth
- Texte original · AnglaisDepth that only reveals itself after many hours of play
