Best Roguelikes 2026: Picks for Different Playstyles
The highest score is a useful starting point, but the right next run depends on what you enjoy. This 2026 selection covers tactical puzzles, card combinations, action, simulation and horde survival, so you can compare different ways to play.
The picks, compared
We selected eight already-reviewed games to cover different playstyles, rather than copying the overall top ten. The selection was assembled on October 8, 2026 and includes games released before 2026. Published scores below can change when a review is revised. Only published, complete five-dimension reviews qualify. Scores and global ranks come directly from the full rankings; equal displayed scores retain their shared rank. These are site scores out of 100, not user votes or similarity scores.
| Game | Global rank | Score / 100 | Choose it for / What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
Into the BreachReview & evidence ↗ | #1 | 90.3 | Positioning mechs in turn-based tactical battles. Focuses on tactical encounters rather than building a card deck. Publisher description ↗ |
Slay the SpireReview & evidence ↗ | #1 | 90.3 | Assembling a deck and combining cards with relics. Uses card combat rather than poker-hand scoring. Publisher description ↗ |
HadesReview & evidence ↗ | #3 | 87.0 | Action combat and repeated attempts to escape the Underworld. Active attacks and movement matter alongside the choices in a build. Publisher description ↗ |
Dead CellsReview & evidence ↗ | #5 | 86.5 | Combining combat with side-scrolling movement. Platforming through an evolving castle changes the action format. Publisher description ↗ |
BalatroReview & evidence ↗ | #9 | 85.0 | Combining poker hands with game-changing Jokers. Hand scoring is the central problem, rather than a tactical battle map. Publisher description ↗ |
FTLReview & evidence ↗ | #10 | 84.0 | Managing a spaceship and crew through a changing galaxy. A ship-management premise rather than controlling one action hero. Publisher description ↗ |
Caves of QudReview & evidence ↗ | #13 | 83.5 | Exploring an RPG world with mutations and cybernetics. Character building and world simulation broaden the scope beyond arena combat. Publisher description ↗ |
Shape Shifter FormationsReview & evidence ↗ | #14 | 83.3 | Twin-stick shooting with weapons and stacking upgrades. A geometric horde-shooter format; check its controls before assuming automatic combat. Publisher description ↗ |
Choose the decisions you want to make
For deliberate planning, start with Into the Breach: its mech battles make positioning the central problem. Slay the Spire puts the emphasis on building a deck during a run, while Balatro uses poker hands and Jokers to create scoring combinations. Their shared turn-based structure does not make them interchangeable.
For movement and execution, compare Hades with Dead Cells. Hades builds its action around escaping the Underworld; Dead Cells adds side-scrolling platforming. Shape Shifter: Formations changes the rhythm again with twin-stick shooting, geometric hordes and stacking upgrades.
When the obvious pick is not your pick
FTL puts a ship and crew at the center of its space journey. Caves of Qud offers a simulated science-fantasy world and character building with mutations and cybernetics. They are useful alternatives if you would rather manage a system or explore an RPG than repeat an action arena.
These picks cover our reviewed catalog, not every roguelike on the market. Scores evaluate the recorded version and available evidence. For platform support, current prices and later updates, check the linked developer store page before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Are these the best new releases of 2026?
No. The year describes when this selection was assembled. Older games are eligible, and no release-year or upcoming-release ranking is implied.
Why does this differ from the top ten?
The full ranking orders every reviewed game by the same weighted score. This smaller selection first chooses varied playstyles, then displays those games in their existing score order. A missing game may still score higher than a selected game.
How are these games scored?
Core gameplay and builds each carry 25%; replayability and randomness/fairness each carry 20%; polish carries 10%. Only complete published reviews enter the rankings. The initial ratings use AI-assisted source research, not hands-on playtesting, and external review scores are kept separate.
